CDC panel recommends updated Covid boosters for people 6 months and older

The CDC’s vaccine advisory panel voted 13-1 to recommend an updated Covid-19 booster for people ages 6 months and older, a day after the FDA cleared Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna’s new shots.

The updated shots target the XBB.1.5 variant and were fully approved for people ages 12 and older. The shots were granted emergency use authorization, a lower bar that still allows broad use, for children 6 months to 11 years.

CDC Director Mandy Cohen will make the agency’s official recommendation before the vaccines are officially rolled out as early as this week.

Committee members heard presentations from Moderna and Pfizer, as well as Novavax, whose protein-based vaccine is still awaiting action by the FDA. Novavax said at the ACIP meeting that it anticipates it will receive clearance for people ages 12 and older and people will be able get the booster regardless of whether they have previously received…
